I absolutely love a good story, scary, funny, heart pounding adventure,
science fiction, fantasy, love stories when done well, and some truly cheesy bad stories, good in a bad way stories, but just that stories. My list of movie favorites alone is completely all over the place. Everything from Fight Club, Blue Velvet, and Four Rooms to things like the Godzilla films, all of Bruce Campbell films, and old Hepburn/ Tracy films. This past Saturday I was introduced to what I hope will be the next wave of Sci FI type stories.
I went and saw the movie Serenity.

You cant stop the signal

I had been watching the series it came from, Firefly, on Sci FI since it led into their Friday night line up. I am impressed, it is a story of real people struggling against the same types of governmental control that we struggle with. Somehow sad to think in this vision we are not better off, in that department, by the time we leave planet earth.
It was everything I like about a good story, as it has been in all the TV episodes. I don’t really watch that much telly, but when I do I like it to be something that really draws me in and gets me thinking. This one has done just that, I want to root out all the secrets this group of people hold. But I digress, My purpose for this post was to talk about how nice the grittiness was after the sterile nature of the last 3 star wars movies. I found this real and refreshing, there was a truth and realism about how the characters approached the different situations they found themselves in. It showed pain, loss, love, family, honor, treachery, betrayal, and redemption all those things that go into making a good tale.I most definitely recommend it to anyone who likes a good story told well.

I am only sorry there is not more of this tale to be devoured at this time. I am taken short at not having the full closure I would like in this type of situation. So maybe Serenity will do well enough that creator Joss Whedon can continue the story and bring it to its full closure and not one forced on it by contrary executives who live and work in a antiseptic unreal world and don’t understand that you cant stop the signal.
